(L. J. Hall, 2009-11-01) What can I say -- these are timeless. I remember them from the 70's and now my 13 and 3 year old daughters are watching them. They cleaned up the "fuzziness' that *may* have been in the original but the colors are true. It is also great for the 3 year old before bed, as the episodes are only 15 minutes, so you are not stuck arguing about watching a 90 minute movie. I also like the way they did the menu -- the villian appears in a little box on the screen as you page thru the episode titles, so you don't have to guess or remember the titles if you want a certain episode. I love these.

(C. Point, 2009-08-11) This is a very nice Scooby Doo DVD set. It contains the first twenty five episodes ever made. Wow! You can finally get them all in one set unlike the dvd's such as greatest mysteries original mysteries and creepiest capers. The discs are high quality and so is the case. The cartoons even have subtitles. It has the original villains such as the space man with a crazy laugh, Creeper, and the phantom puppeteer. The episodes are very entertaining too! A great buy!

(Joker, 2009-08-08) I've always loved the original Scooby Doo cartoons. The first season (1969) and the second season (1970) were by far the best Scooby Doo mysteries ever. Things started to go downhill when they started to include Scooby Dum and Scrappy Doo, etc. in later years. The first two seasons are the best. I used to watch Scooby Doo and other cartoons every Saturday morning before going to my junior bowling league. Then I'd come home in time to watch The Pro Bowlers Tour on ABC at 3:30, then ABC's Wide World Of Sports at 5:00. Those were the days when TV had good shows and good cartoons, such as Scooby Doo. The stuff of today is plain sick and lame garbage compared to the shows of yesteryear. These DVDs will entertain longtime fans and newcomers alike. You can't go wrong with a cartoon that features humor, a mystery to solve and crooks dressed as spooks who try to scare their way to a fortune where the setting is often a haunted house. I love Halloween, so this show has always been right up my alley. I think Shaggy and Scooby are at their best in these two seasons as far as humor goes. Every episode has them clowning around in some way. I like the ever-shifting trajectory of these episodes. There's a scary moment, then there's a light and hilarious moment. It's a good mix of humor and haunts. You get all 25 episodes in this set. My personal favorites are Spooky Space Kook, Hassle In The Castle, Bedlam In The Big Top, Mine Your Own Business, A Gaggle Of Galloping Ghosts, A Night Of Fright Is No Delight, That's Snow Ghost, and Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Werewolf? Scooby Doo Where Are You? is an all-time classic cartoon and far better than anything out there today. Your kids will love it. This stuff is 40 years old and has stood the test of time, so I highly recommend it!

(Rina, 2009-07-17) My 4 year old and 2 year old LOVE Scooby. The thrill is what keeps them going!! But beware, it may be a little too scary for 2 year olds, because since Scooby, my daughter is very afraid at night. But it's too late; she loves it, so I still let her watch.

I decided to make his life (and mine!) a little easier by purchasing this series for his birthday--HE LOVES IT!!! Now we (including his 15yr old sister) don't argue over who gets the TV and he can watch his favorite episodes over and over and over...great purchase!

(Monique G. Desrochers, 2009-09-27) This is a cute Survivor like reality show in cartoon style. Chris tortures a group of teenage campers and the drama abounds. They do crazy stunts like jumping out of an airplane with bad parachutes and landing onto a couch, blind trapaze with no net over a small pond filled with jelly fish, a blindfolded William Tell with the arrow and apple thing, all to compete for a 100,000 dollar prize. They vote off a camper each week. Sometimes they will conspire to get rid of a fellow camper who then walks down the "Dock of Shame" to the "Boat of Losers". The characters go into the outhouse to do personal diaries. It's funny and quirky. My 10 year old daughter wanted this for her birthday. She loves it. Recommended for all kids under 13 or so. And not so bad for grownups either.

Fans have been waiting years for this and now it's here! The show was comprised of 16 hour long episodes (about 45 minutes without commercials) and included some rare guest appearances such as Green Arrow & Plastic Man among others. Warner Brothers is releasing the 1973 Season in Two 8 episode Volumes, which are both 2 discs each. Then now, they just slap on those god-awful double side disc and says the complete superman collection. I mean the Batman animated series the complete animated series dvd set got a much better complete collection dvd release then this. I'm highly dissapointed.

(Thom, 2009-09-21) When I saw this was being released I thought Superman would finally be available in the same quality as all the other products in DCAU. But no. This is still going to have the two sided discs which get scratched to easily and just don't seem to have the quality. I would have bought it otherwise. The one good thing about this is it is reasonably priced unlike the complete Batman and soon to be released complete Justice league which cost more than the individual seasons combined.

(trashcanman, 2009-09-11) Superman is truly one of the greatest superheroes ever to bear the title. He also happens to be one of the most maligned. There's even an entire website dedicated to proving he's a jerk. Few things make a mean-spirited comic geek smile more then seeing The Man of Steel getting his rear end handed to him. Some of the reasons for this are innate to the nature of the character, and some are based on the way the character has been handled by writers in the past (what with the racist WWII propaganda and all). Supe's reputation as "The Big Blue Boy Scout" makes him a fairly lame goody-two-shoes kind of hero, which is really hard to get away from without changing the character entirely. Modern sensibilities prefer darker heroes like Batman. Also, the fact that Superman is ridiculously overpowered makes him hard to root for. We like underdogs. Underdogs generally aren't invincible with superspeed, heat beams, x-ray vision, plus immortal with infinite strength. Most great heroes are flawed and are often at a disadvantage against their villains, but Superman was always portrayed as flawless and indomitable. Unless you had a green rock that is. That's what we call an uninteresting weakness. Also, Supes has become a massively utilized deus ex machina device for DC comic writers. Write yourself into an impossible situation in a Green Arrow story? No worries, Ollie can just shout Clark's name and all's taken care of. Ugh. But when you get down to it, we all grew up with him and we all love him. He's as American as apple pie and 10 times more iconic. He's also one of those characters whose moral compass is always clean. It may make him boring, but it also makes him a perfect hero. After the massive success that was Batman: The Animated Series, where else would DC's amazing animation team go? And they did an amazing job with a hero whose kiddie comic legacy gave them little to work with. Here's the textbook for writing great Superman stories, right here. Now, Supe's God complex was the first thing that needed to go. No turning back time at light speed or moving planets out of orbit for this Superman. This is a powered down version of the character who retains all of his powers from the comics, but has them amped down just enough to make him vulnerable and more relatable. He regularly has to use his brain to outwit villains, which is great. Second, the characters needed work. The shallowness of The Man of Steel's rogues gallery is legendary. Plus his legacy is layered with more cheese then a Chicago-style pizza. While there are numerous winks and references to the old school (Krypto and Bepto even get nods), this iteration really brought a hipper attitude and presentation of the denizens of Metropolis while walking the line between respect to the source material and updating outmoded devices flawlessly. This show is quite simply the definitive Superman. It pays tribute to the Golden Age with a sly sense of humor, but makes bold strokes to set itself apart from every past version of the character and the result should please all fans old and new. Pretty much the entire "Batman" team returned for this show, which accounts for the quality, and the voice acting was again as impressive as the fluid animation and great character designs. Dana Delaney is the perfect Lois Lane. She plays the character as cynical and snarky but lovable and entirely fearless. It's still annoying to me that the best reporter on the planet can't figure out that her closest co-worker is Superman with glasses on, Especially considering she finds out who Batman is in a day or two. I'd prefer that relationship just be out in the open already. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. Other awesome contributions to the show include Michael Ironside as planet conquering overlord Darkseid, the fantastic Malcolm McDowell as kryptonite-fueled terminator Metallo, Lori Petty as Livewire (who was created for this series and proved to be one of the more memorable villains), and Brad Garrett as The Main Man himself, Lobo. A great cast goes a long way to making a good animated endeavor an unforgettable one. Like "Batman" the show also featured episodes co-starring many other DC regulars including Steel, Dr. Fate, Aquaman, The Flash (who challenges Supes to a footrace), Green Lantern, and others. The centerpiece of the series is an epic three episode arc teaming up The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel in a perfect melding of the two series. Bruce Wayne sweeps Lois off of her feet, Harley Quinn has a catfight with Lex Luthor's bodyguard Mercy Graves (another of several character created for the show that ended up being adapted to the comics), The Joker owns Supey and Luthor alike; the whole thing screams "WE LOVE YOU!" to fans of both shows. It was the first time they would cross over, but not the last. Eventually the entire DCAU would be united in the flawless Justice League series as a result. While "Superman: The Animated Series" is not as good as the Batman and JLA series, the difference in quality is negligible. This is a remarkable cartoon show that is probably even more enjoyable for adults then it is for children due to the sly humor and occasional darkness that marks this as the best adaptation of the character ever. Obnoxious interdimensional imp Mr. Mxyzptlk (voiced by Gilbert Goddfried, no less) being outwitted in seconds (he has to say his own name backwards to be sent back to his own dimension) by Clark and then spending 3 months plotting his next scheme while ignoring his Jessica Rabbit-looking sexpot of a wife only to be outsmarted in seconds again is too funny. And the evil irony of a murderer deducing Superman's secret identity exactly one second before he is executed is black comedy at it's finest. And let me tell you, the final arc shows us a seriously dark side to the Kryptonian boy scout. However, I honestly find it hard to believe that they went three full seasons without General Zod and his crew. They had a pair of Kryptonian criminals that were similar, but I think it's safe to say we would have rather seen updated versions of the villains from The best Superman film. While the cynic in me still likes to see Supes get owned now and again, this show made me realize just he much fondness I still have for the character and what he stands for. He holds a unique role as the prototypical American superhero who was and is the ideal champion to children everywhere. The 70's films with Christopher Reeve will remain cherished classics for generations to come. Big Blue deserves his props and this is where he really got it outside of comics it for the first time since Reeve wore the cape and refused to kneel before Zod. Fans of "Batman: The Animated Series" or comic book superheroes in general need to check this out. This is how you adapt The Man of Steel. 4 1/2 stars, rounded up for degree of difficulty.

(Corgi Kid, 2009-11-03) I just purchased the second volume from the Saturday Morning Cartoons 70's collection. Let me just say that I am quite pleased with this collection. I watched many of these cartoons during the 70's and it brings back many happy memories from childhood. The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show and the Banana Splits were the primary reasons of my purchase. The bridging sequences including the introduction to both Bugs Bunny/Road Runner and Banana Splits were not restored. However, I can't complain too much. I am unable to get the Cartoon Network Boomerang channel where I live and have been wanting to watch many of these cartoons for such a long time. I hope Warner Brothers continues to release more collections in the near feature. More Bugs Bunny/Road Runner and Banana Splits please! Also, would like to see the New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Michael Shea (Huck) and Lu Ann Haslam (Becky Thatcher); really campy but from part of the Banana Splits series. Thanks again Amazon!

(John W. Yocum, 2009-11-01) I didn't buy the first 70's set because there just seemed to be too much on it that I never watched. This set, however, was full of things I remembered. I appreciate seeing them no matter what condition the prints are in, but there are a few odd things about the set. First, there are two adventures with Shazzan, but if you select "play all" you only get to see one. You have to go back to the menu to select the other episode. Also, the main titles from Shazzan are missing. Secondly, what was supposed to be the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour seems to be an episode from the five-week 1/2 hour evening run that the show did on CBS in the mid-seventies one summer. There are only four cartoons and since they used restored prints for this set and not the original edited-for-violence versions, the show lasts 28 minutes, which would be too long for the original 1/2 hour length and too short for the hour-long version. Finally - what's up with the menus and chapter stops on these sets? I wish you could select just the show you wanted and it would play the whole thing. The way it is, if you select Banana Splits from the menu you have to watch part of the show, then it goes back to the menu where you have to select the next part of the show. Of course, you canjust hit "play all" and skip to the show you want, so I guess it's OK. Overall, I love this set (except for "Yogi's Gang" for reasons mentioned by another reviewer) and look forward to more.

(Andre M., 2009-10-31) Okay, literally speaking this is not just a seventies set (Shazzan & the Banana Splits are from the late 60s), but if you were born between about 1960 to 1973, you'll really get mellow over this. Much of this has since been forgotten or ignored by pop culture, but since those of us who fondly loved these as children as only children can are now in position to get them back, then let the games begin! The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show inlcuded here will bring on the warm and fuzzies for the generation that immediately followed the baby boomers. The fondly recalled tune "On With the Show" with Bugs & Daffy and the Road Runner theme songs will make those who remember this show smile with a warm glow. "Shazzan" was the first cartoon I actually remember watching on television. The adventures of two kids with the flying genie is a good example of the wholesome but FUN adventure-type toon that ruled the Sat. morning airwaves until the Shiny Happy People brigade of Politically Correct killjoys nearly destroyed the genre by imposing sissified Barney-style New Zoo Revue fruit loop slop that was long on morals but short on entertainment. "Yogi's Gang" (1973) is a sad example of this. The once great HB stable is reduced to a nauseating tale of the beloved Yogi, misled by an Archbunker type, touting the superiority of bears and dismissing the others as "animal lovers." Mess like this should have been lost in a fire like "London After Midnight". Oh Pepto-Bismol, where is thy sting? Bring back Ranger Smith and the pic-i-nic baskets! You had to be there to really dig "The Great Grape Ape," the adventures of a 40 ft. purple ape (Magilla's cousin?) and his canine sidekick Beagly Beagly, but it remains amusing to a point and I'm glad to see it again after 30 years. The 1970s defanged Tom & Jerry (for reasons stated in the above paragraph) are no comparison-poor cousins to the violent but hilarious original classics. Best of all for late 60s/early 70s kids is the funny and funky BANANA SPLITS-Hanna Barbera meets Sly Stone-that is fondly remembered by our age group. I particularly enjoyed DANGER ISLAND with it's Batman-style tounge in cheek adventures, and you'll be VERY pleased to see it here. (Everbody sing "Tra la La, La la la la!") Overall, this will make people of our age group VERY happy and is a good rendidtion of what we enjoyed in the pre-DVD, Internet, and video game days. Most of these will also be enjoyed by the current tot set, so it's a worthwhile family purchase.

(MEWZIK, 2009-10-30) My favorite edition of Saturday Morning Cartoons for sure. So, if you don't have Boomerang, or had enough of watching horrid quality internet movies -this is GOLD. At this point though, I'd like to see a proper release with all the episodes of say Shazzan! Grape Ape and Hair Bear Bunch. If there was no market, they wouldn't put it in Cartoon Network programming. Shazzan! is the least seen of all these classics, so what's the point of holding them back to dvd or even download only? The plus is they picked strong episodes here. Nonetheless, how can this compilation not get five stars? Arrested development accomplished! What would make this better (not that I hold this against anyone) is adding a couple timepiece commercials between the breaks...I'm thinking Happy Meal and bad teeth fall out of your mouth cereal commercials. Exit, Stage Right.

No restoration attempts were made for The Banana Splits Adventure Hour, that is from an ancient 2" video tape with occasional glitches & break-up. I know the show was quickly cut up into half-hours in the mid '70s, but some film segment elements should still survive. Another Disappointment is the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show, it is the short-run Prime Time half-hour version that ran in the summer of 1976 on CBS, not the hour long saturday morning version. NOTE: Authoring error: if you chose 'Play All' The Living Island cartoon from Shazzan will not play! You must select this individually. Disc 1 HELP! But if you grew up on Saturday Morning cartoons in the 1970's this sampling will bring a smile to your face. One thing that puzzles me is the inclusion of some 1960's cartoons. I don't remember SHAZZAN (1967) ever airing on Saturday Mornings in the 1970's. Maybe somebody confused it with 1974's SHAZAM, a totally different show spelled with one "Z" and a "M". THE BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE HOUR (1968) did technically run until the end of summer 1970 and then went into syndication, even though only one season was produced. THE BUGS BUNNY/ROAD RUNNER SHOW started as an hour show in 1968, but this is the CBS summer of 1976 PRIME TIME half-hour version. Unlike THE BUGS BUNNY/ROAD RUNNER SHOW, the TOM & JERRY/GRAPE APE SHOW will not feature classic theatrical cartoons, these will be the cheaply made Hanna Barbera TV cartoons from the 1970's. This show is probably the weakest in the bunch, and it is the full hour version! I dare you to sit through the entire show without pushing the fast-forward button. SEALAB 2020 & VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS are probably the highlights here. Both of these reminded me of my favorite Saturday Morning adventure cartoons of the late 1960's & seemed to be a refuge from the ultra-silly cartoons of the 1970's that required laughtracks to remind you that it is funny. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy comedy cartoons, but the 1970's comedy cartoons were pitiful. Just compare THE PEBBLES & BAMM BAMM SHOW to the classic FLINTSTONES of the 1960's.

(Matthew Hunter, 2009-11-04) -Review by Matthew Hunter [...] "Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960's Volume 2" is kind of like that huge "sampler" tin of chocolates your family gets for Christmas every once in a while. There's a lot of variety, plenty for everybody, and the contents range from fantastic to gag-inducing. This set, like the previous volume, collects a wide variety of cartoon series from the 1960's, and attempts to present them as closely to their original TV presentation as possible. It's a great idea on Warner's part, as it brings together material that may not warrant a complete box-set release by itself (or hasn't yet) in an affordable and enjoyable way. The bulk of the material included here is of the Hanna-Barbera variety, and it's interesting to compare earlier, better material like "Quick Draw McGraw" to later efforts like "Atom Ant" and "Wally Gator". Towards the end of the 1960's, Hanna-Barbera had been cloning their "funny animal" formula so often that it grew even more stale with every new attempt. H-B eventually began focusing on "action" cartoons, and unfortunately the examples of these included on this set are among the weakest. The collection opens with an episode from "The Quick Draw McGraw Show", nicely restored with its original opening theme song and supporting segments, "Snooper and Blabber" and "Augie Doggie". The animation on this show is limited and low-budget, but the writing and humor hold up extremely well, thanks in large part to writer Michael Maltese. Quick Draw is a Wild West hero who just happens to be a horse, Snooper and Blabber are a cat and mouse detective team, and Augie Doggie is a brainy sitcom-style kid living with his fater, Doggie Daddy. This episode, along with a second episode focusing on Quick Draw's famous alter-ego, "El Kabong", really makes me wish Warner had released the Quick Draw show as a standalone series collection. Next up is a show that should be avoided at all costs. Though an interesting curio, there is absolutely no entertainment value in "The Space Kidettes", a show about a group of annoyingly cute space-age kids in a Jetsons-esque setting who are being stalked by a space pirate named Captain Skyhook. Its supporting segment, "Young Samson", is even worse, about a teenage boy named Samson and his dog, Goliath, who can transform into a superhero and a lion, respectively. How does a dog turn into a lion? That is a mystery I do not want to uncover...because to do it, I would have to watch more episodes! This show sucks, and is largely unheard of for VERY good reason. "The Bugs Bunny Show" is a nice surprise, including the original "This Is It" title sequence and some long-lost bridging footage. Mac and Tosh, the Goofy Gophers, are the hosts, but end their incessant polite disagreement forces Bugs himself to introduce the cartoons to keep the show going. There is some footage missing, but everything is in color and presented as it would have aired in Saturday Morning reruns. All three cartoons (minus titles and credits, as they originally aired) look fine: "Big House Bunny' and "Canned Feud" are the restored "Golden Collection" versions, "Home Tweet Home" is not, but it's a better transfer than I've seen before. "The Porky Pig Show" compiles three more Warner Bros. classics with the original opening, closing and several bumper segments from that TV package. An interesting "skit" that probably originated on the "Bugs Bunny Show" has Bugs Bunny playing piano on stage, in animation re-traced from "Rhapsody Rabbit", to introduce the musical short "Baton Bunny". The other two shorts included are "Scaredy Cat" and "Feather Dusted", and all but the third are restored. "Feather Dusted" is at least uncut and is a perfectly acceptable copy. Next, we get another "lost treasure" from Hanna-Barbera, entitled "The Adventures of Gulliver". A young man named Gulliver and his father go on a sea voyage with a treasure map to a lost island, a creepy stowaway thug knocks them out, steals the map, and Gulliver wakes up shipwrecked with his dog on the island of Lilliput. What follows is little more than a loosely updated knockoff of the old Jonathan Swift tale "Gulliver's Travels". It will probably be of interest only to those who recall seeing it as kids. No flaws in terms of print quality, picture or sound here. "The Wally Gator Show" is a fondly-remembered 3-cartoon variety show featuring "Wally Gator", "Touche Turtle", and "Lippy Lion and Hardy Har-Har". Unfortunately, it was a hastily-produced and thoroughly lackluster series, aimed squarely at children. Wally Gator longs to roam free in the Everglades, instead he's stuck in a zoo with a nagging zookeeper named Mr. Twiddle. Touche Turtle is a diminutive do-gooder voiced by Bill "Droopy Dog" Thompson, who dresses like a French musketeer and tries to help people (in this case, Captain Ahab) along with his aptly named dog sidekick, Dum Dum. Lippy the Lion and his depressed, sad-sack hyena sidekick Hardy Har Har (brilliantly voiced by Mel Blanc) are easily the best of the bunch, but they, too, seem cookie-cutter and forced. If these cartoons have not aged well content-wise, they have fared even worse physically. Originally mastered on cheap film, they look muddy, scratchy and at times out of focus. For those nostalgia buffs longing to see this stuff beautifully restored, you won't find it here! A classic "Jetsons" episode entitled "Elroy's Mob" rounds out the first disc. Young Elroy gets mixed up in a crime, and in typical 60's sitcom fashion, hilarity ensues, followed by a happy ending. It looks and sounds great, probably the same version used for the original series DVD set. Disc Two begins with Quick Draw McGraw again, this time in the guise of "El Kabong", a masked, Zorro-like alter-ego who fights villains by bashing them on the head with a guitar. Once again, this does not disappoint, with razor-sharp humor and charm that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Snooper, Blabber, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy once again hold the supporting segments, and are also worthwhile, "Augie" especially. As with the episode on Disc 1, everything from the opening and closing titles to the cartoon shorts in between look and sound great. Following Quick Draw, we again descend into the abyss of Hanna-Barbera's decline with one of the strangest cartoon characters ever created: Peter Potamus. Peter is a fat, purple hippo who travels the world in a hot air balloon with his monkey pal, SoSo. In this episode, Peter gets caught in the middle of a fight between cowboys and Indians. The one highlight of this exercise in blandness is the voice work of Daws Butler, Don Messick, and Mel Blanc, but since the endless stream of talk is all there is to it, it gets boring in a hurry. When Peter (not to mention the audience!) has had enough, he dispatches his tormenters with his "Hippo Hurricane Holler". Translation: he screams loud enough that it literally blows everyone away. Supporting segments include "Breezly and Sneezly", a polar bear and a seal who have nothing better to do than annoy the soldiers at a military outpost in the Arctic, and "Yippie, Yappie and Yahooey", three dogs who serve as inept guards to a fussy Medieval king. It's hard to imagine anyone getting excited about any of these goofball critters, and though they have their moments, they pale in comparison to earlier H-B efforts and will probably bore kids and adults alike. The show's original opening and closing are included, and are in pretty rough shape, but the cartoons themselves look fine. Once Peter and pals get the blandness out of their systems, we get an episode of "The Road Runner Show". I was really looking forward to this, and was very disappointed with the results! The original opening, closing, a rarely-seen animated bumper segments are included, as are the title cards created exclusively for this iconic package of Warner classics. The bumper segments are not to be missed: director Robert McKimson created these after the departure of Chuck Jones from the Warner Bros. animation studio, and while low-budget, they are extremely funny. Where the folks at Warner compiling this DVD collection went wrong, though, is evident in the cartoons themselves. Whereas the "Bugs Bunny" and "Porky Pig" shows mixed the old, worn-out TV bridging footage with nice, clean copies of the actual cartoons, the "Road Runner Show" gets a little TOO "authentic", using copies of the cartoons from the same old TV masters as the bridging animation. The results look terrible, especially the opening short, "Zip N' Snort", which looks so bad that Chuck Jones is probably turning in his grave over it. The other two cartoons included, Sylvester and Tweety in "The Jet Cage" and Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote and Speedy Gonzales' race-off "The Wild Chase", look just as awful, and there is absolutely no excuse for that. They are faded, scratchy and blurred. Why would you drink spoiled milk when you have a fresh, unopened carton in the same fridge? Maybe I've been spoiled by the wonderful restorations Warner released on the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection" DVD series, but these cartoons look worse than I've ever seen them, and including them in this manner is disgraceful. Next comes "Atom Ant", another Hanna-Barbera series about a little ant with super powers. The title character is a snooze, but the supporting segments, "Precious Pupp" and "Hillbilly Bears", prove more entertaining. "Precious" isn't particularly funny, but he is an ancestor of one of H-B's most memorable and entertaining creations, Muttley. Precious shares Muttley's mumbling voice and wheezy laugh, but instead of Muttley's villainous master, Dastardly, Precious' companion is a sweet little old lady. The segment is not particularly clever or funny, but it's a nice try. "Hillbilly Bears" is easily the best segment, and should have received top billing over Atom. It's about a family of (what else? Hillbilly bears!) voiced by Henry Corden (Paw) Jean Vander Pyl (Maw, Flora) and Don Messick (Shag). Corden's mumbling, grumbling, almost unintelligible voice for Paw is absolutely hilarious. Irreverent, politically incorrect and violent (Paw has an itchy trigger finger to match his big black-powder gun), it's a miracle that a cartoon this funny managed to spring up out of the bland mire of this later H-B material. Skip Atom and Precious and watch the Bears! In terms of physical quality, everything looks and sounds fine here. "The Tom and Jerry Show" is interesting only for some linking segments animated by Chuck Jones, which have not been seen in years. They're not in very good shape, but they're fun to see for the first time. The rest of the show is classic MGM cartoons: Tom and Jerry in "Salt Water Tabby", Droopy in "Mutts About Racing" and Tom, Jerry and Little Quacker in "Just Ducky". These are nothing new if you already own the Tom and Jerry "Spotlight" sets and the "Tex Avery's Droopy" DVD, the only difference is that the MGM Lion openings and credits are replaced with made-for-TV title cards. The set comes to a close with "Magilla Gorilla". Some fans of this series complained that the stand-alone series DVD set didn't include the theme song, and it has been included here. Magilla Gorilla is fondly remembered, but really doesn't have a whole lot going for him except a catchy theme song and a likeable personality. A bonus documentary pretty much agrees with me. As with "Atom Ant", the supporting segments are more entertaining, but not by much. "Punkin Puss and Mushmouse" are a sort of talkative, Ozark hillbilly Tom and Jerry, and probably never caught on with audiences due to their derivative premise. There are only so many variations that can be done on the "cat vs. mouse" cartoon, and by the time these guys came along, they were one variation too many. "Ricochet Rabbit", a segment sometimes seen on "Peter Potamus" as well, is a lot of fun. A rabbit sheriff named Ricochet (Don Messick) and his deputy, Droop-Along Coyote (Mel Blanc), try to keep law and order in the Wild West. It's got some wit to it, and the characters are instantly likeable, but the influence of earlier Western plots in "Huckleberry Hound" and "Quick Draw McGraw" is painfully clear. In summary, this DVD is a fun way to spend a lazy day off, and nostalgia hounds will get a kick out of it. Unfortunately, it's a mixed bag in terms of content and image quality. It does offer a lot of material for not a lot of money, so it's well worth checking out as long as you're not expecting perfection. And doooon't you forget it!

(Corgi Kid, 2009-11-03) This is a cool blast from the past (1960's) that will be enjoyed by anyone who loves the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons. I just wish it had a collector's booklet or episode guide so you read more about the cartoons and summaries. I hope Warner will release more in this series.

Think I will have to go back to my first plan and simply wait for a studio to release these two titles separately like they did with Space Ghost and Bird Man. Please wake me when the studios release what I want and not just what they want to waste my time with.

A highlight for Looney Tunes fans is the inclusion of three different shows that feature some new-to-DVD Warner Brothers cartoons (not all are new). Again this is making up for the cancellation of the Golden collections of DVDs.

I didn't know, or at least didn't remember, that it would be in a metal case, which was a great bonus. Then I took the two 'books' out of the case to flip through the DVDs and I got a little perplexed. The Volume 1 DVDs were in the Volume 2 Book and vice versa. Odd, I thought. So, I decided to 'fix' the problem by switching the DVDs out one by one, which I thought was a great idea until I realized there are more discs in the second book. So, I had to switch the DVDs back to their original book and switch the cover and booklets instead. Not a big problem and nothing worth complaining about, just thought I'd save anyone else with the same trouble the hassle of mistakenly trying to switch the discs. Now that that's solved, I can start watching Justice League!

(Brent Huxford, 2009-09-28) I grew up on Super Friends and the orginal JLA, but it was geared toward me and my current age at that time. This series hooked myself and my 3 year old. Which says alot for the story writing and character highlights per episode. very complex story arcs give it the feel of prime time shows, without all the tired wit. It's made for kids, plain and simple, but this series does it right with such a range, you not only enjoy the show, it's not a guilty pleasure. The animation really hasn't dated itself either. They stayed on the cutting edge of the day to give this series a more lasting look. Some of the 3D sequences are slightly aged, but easily over looked. Pit against Superman or Batman: the animated series, this is easily the best one. Each is good in it's right, but if i could choose one, this is it. Not only do you get the same amazing voice talent (Batman), the stories are so rich and varied, you find yourself never bored with the series.

(Kyle Leader, 2009-06-02) the first season of futurama was pretty good but this one is the best of the seasons. this season has some great episodes like Head in the Polls where Nixon takes benders body and runs for president of earth. other good episode include the deep south and war is the H-word one episode that is not very funny is the honking but all the other episodes make up for it. the box set has 19 episodes and the episodes are still good before the quality declined in the third and fourth season.

(David M. Wright, 2008-09-30) There's nothing I like more than watching cartoons just after I wake up mid-afternoon and eating breakfast, and Futurama is one of the best cartoons to accompany that. It's hard to judge a season of Futurama without judging it against the context of four stellar seasons and two excellent movies, and not on its own merit. Expanded against first season's mere 13 episodes, this season has 19 episodes of sci-fi parody Groening style. As a number of reviewers have stated, each episode is jam packed with visual jokes that requires pausing several times just to get everything. On top of that, we are continued to the continuing adventures of one of the greatest casts in animation history: Fry, Bender, Leela, Professor Farnsworth, and my personal favorite, Dr. Zoidberg. Some episode highlights include: "Brannigan, Begin Again" where Zapp Brannigan is court martialed and forced to live Midnight Cowboy style, "Raging Bender" where Bender becomes a robot wrestler, "A Bicyclops for Two" where Leela meets fellow cylcops alien "Al"cazar, and "War Is The H-Word" where Fry negotiates peace with the head of Henry Kissinger. A great alternative to the Simpsons (especially modern Simpsons)!!!

Normally, Cartoons tend to express innocense or simplicity, these do not, let the buyer be aware, and let the buyer think carefully before purchasing these for children, as they may not be suitable for same given the content and portent. Other than the aformentioned, these cartoons can be very funny.

I won't go into each and every episode - quite a few have already done so (better than I ever could). What I will offer is an opinion on the series itself. It's essentially the Seinfeld of animated series. Most, if not all, episodes have infinite longevity. From Fry's endless obsession with Leela to Bender's constant black humor. Zoidberg's self-deprecating humor matched with Farnsworth's constant 2nd place finishes. Amy's pseudo-naivete paired against Kiff's subtle bumblings. Santa-Bot's paradoxical ravings infecting the drunken, whimsical elves (like something out of a Tim Burton "nightmare"). Hermes' steady, Jamaican, taskmaster personality controlling each situation with effectiveness. This series has infinite influences to numerous to fully capture - so I'll stop trying. Futurama has a devoted fan-following for countless reasons. Just watch it - you'll be hooked.

Although it was always well-received, the executives at Fox seemed to have a vendetta against the show, heavily censoring it and then finally canceling it before its time. However, strong DVD sales and high ratings on Cartoon Network pulled the series back from the brink. The result is this DVD volume which features the beginning of Family Guy's return. The show starts off strong again, although it doesn't quite have the same crackle that it once had. Family Guy, like the Simpsons, has a number of divisive opinions. Some claim the shows have gone steadily downhill for years, while others claim that it's funnier than ever. My opinion on the series is the former, but most of that downhill slide came after this DVD volume. The episodes on this DVD include a terrific return to the airwaves coupled with a skewering of Fox's decision to cancel them in the first place. It fleshes out some of the minor characters of Quahog, such as Peter's neighbor Cleveland, and it gives the spotlight to Meg and Chris a bit more. Most importantly, it features an episode guest-starring James Woods that is one of the best Family Guy episodes there has ever been. The reason I give this four stars instead of five is because while the episodes are very good, there are definite signs that the show has lost some of its focus over the years. Stewie has gone from being an evil baby to a continuous gay joke, although the creators do sometimes tap back into his sinister side. The cutaways become increasingly nonsensical as the writers start to rely more on one-note jokes than the plot of the show. And some running gags, particularly Peter's recurring fights with a giant chicken, will leave newcomers to the show cold. While these are all symptoms to the show's eventual slide, the episodes here remain in good form. While not quite as strong as seasons 2 and 3 were, this new Family Guy is still worth watching and will definitely earn its laughs.

Again, great entertainment for people who can laugh at themselves (instead of others). Family Guy fans, a must have!

Stewie is my fave character! I got the family guy bendable set and a Stewie plush animated doll. HILARIOUS!!! SOmeone always comments on it when new people come over. You know they should make a movie: "Chucky vs. Stewie"! That would've been better I believe than the "Seed of CHucky". THink about it, there both bout the same size and both have overalls. Hmmmm. What you all think? Just a idea. I got a few Chucky dolls from 12" to 30" too. That Stewie Halloween costume is cool too!

(Charlie Brooks, 2009-11-09) This DVD volume presents the third season of Family Guy, which is also probably the best. The characters are firmly established, the pacing between the stories and cutaways is excellent, and the balance of crude and clever humor is just about perfect. Like many others, you will probably watch these episodes and wonder how on Earth Fox ever decided to cancel such a terrific show. The episodes here come from Family Guy's peak. The show would get canceled following this season, and even though it came back, it never quite matched what was done here. Key among the episode list is "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein," the show's infamous banned episode. While I'm normally not one for commentary tracks, the creator commentary on this episode is very illuminating not only as to the messed up logic that Fox takes when deciding such matters but also in illustrating how badly the network seemed to have it in for this show. Family Guy, volume 2 might as well be called "The Best of Family Guy." For folks who have never seen the show, it is a great introduction with some classic episodes. For those who only started watching after it returned, these episodes blow the current ones away. And for those who enjoyed the show in its heyday, this volume is a great reminder of how terrific McFarlane and company were before Fox decided to pull the plug all too early.

In later seasons there is a lot more curing and more violence and they insult a lot of people. This season barely has any of this and everyone should get it and say that this is much better than later seasons although the later seasons are still good too in a weird way.

Seth, without us the loyal fans, you wouldnt have a hit show, so why stick it to us by releasing half seasons and then once we've purchased those, then you release the High Def widescreen editions....

It had the family guy logo on the disc and everything, but when we put it in the DVD player, "Nim's Island" started. This was a short enough season as it is. Now we only have the first disc of 4 or 5 episodes. Highly disappointing.

I remember when Family Guy first debuted on TV thinking that the idea of a talking baby was ridiculous so I never bothered to watch the program. Then one day I was on YouTube looking at videos and saw a hilarious clip of Family Guy featuring Stewie. I started watching the program after that and was completely hooked after a couple of episodes. I own all the volumes of this show and look at them often laughing hysterically. I would love to choose my favorite characters but that would be impossible since they are all so funny. If you haven't watched this program, you are cheating yourself out of an extremely funny and witty show.

(Khalid Alnaqbi, 2009-08-24) My first time to watch the Family Guy episode was few months ago. I actually enjoyed that episode in my hotel, though I don't know what season it was from. So, I decided to buy Season 1 and 2. Pros: 1. I loved Stewi with his funny thinking and his British accent, I think he's the best character in the whole show. I also like the dog and Lois. Peter Griffin was not the best character (dumb, has a stupid laugh) and his son has the same problem. 2. The show has some good jokes now and then. Cons: 1. I agree that the show was insensible in discussing many issues, like people with special needs or other religions. 2. There are many scenes with nudity and violence in this show, which I do not appreciate, especially for this "family" cartoon. I also did not notice that this show brings many of the values for our society, despite what the song says (It seems today, that all you see, is violence in movies and sex on TV) !! There is that pervert guy who's the Griffin's neighbor, that needs to be removed from the show ! 3. Season 1 has 1 CD but without any special features. Season 2 has Behind the Scenes feature which lasted probably for few minutes. Hope the next seasons are better.

(E. A Solinas, 2009-08-23) It's time for the nefarious plans of the Bount to be revealed, and for our heroes to torturously fight their way to the ultimate bad guy. "Bleach 22" is top-heavy on elaborate magical combat and light on actual plot developments, but it has some interesting plot twists -- particularly one that seems to be leading into the next big arc. While Ichigo's little gang recuperates from their fights, Yumichika has discovered the location of the Bounts' hideout, and the four Soul Reaper officers head inside. Obviously things go wrong for them, or this arc would end pretty quickly. Specifically, they run afoul of the bespectacled Ugaki, whose doll turns shadows into weapons, eyeballs and giant hands. When Ichigo and Co. arrive, they are attacked by the same tactics. In the meantime, Uryu encounters a Soul Reaper from the previous arcs -- Nemu Kurotsuchi, who has come there to give him a very special item that may provide some temporary help in his current trouble. And Ichigo has some shocking discoveries of his own when he finds and attacks the souped-up Kariya -- he learns the true origins of the Bount, and what their ultimate goal is. The first 75% of "Bleach Volume 22" is pretty much non-stop action and fighting -- our heroes and the supporting cast are assaulted with biting flying eyeballs, falling rocks, ropy tentacles Ichigo and Orihime), giant shadow hands (Rukia and Yumichika) and occasionally The Pizza Cutter From Hell. Even Uryu gets pulled into some combat with Nemu. But the plot erupts all over the place in the fourth episode, with new revelations and a very shocking plot twist that leaves the heroes at even more of a disadvantage. There's still action (mainly a bloodied Ichigo bouncing around with his bankai powers), but the story suddenly hits a turning point. It's pretty obvious that a whole new arc is opening up after this, and the advantage is with the Bounts. The biggest flaw? Uryu does something INSANELY contrived at the end of this round of episodes, which is also uncharacteristically selfish, stupid and short-sighted. Even more bizarre, all the characters instantly forgive him. Other than that, several of the characters get to shine -- Ichigo's determination to stop the Bounts' master plan is tempered by his disgust for Kariya sacrificing one of his own. Orihime gets to show her skills in battle, and the four visiting Soul Reapers also demonstrate their own skill and stamina. When even flake queen Rangiku is utterly serious and Yumichika doesn't whine about "ugly" things, you know it's bad. "Bleach Volume 22" is marred by a contrived climactic twist and an absurd decision from Uryu, but is otherwise a solid, action-packed gateway into a new arc.

With Aqua Teen, Space Ghost, and Sealab, it's got all the classic shows from when [adult swim] first started, along with the recent shows, Moral Oral, Robot Chicken, and Metalocalypse. I will probably get this when it comes out, seems like a good mix. Like other reviewers, the season choice is... strange to say the least. Although, I'm guessing that [adult swim] thought that those were the best seasons/volumes that have been released so far. And I mostly agree, although I like season 1 Sealab better. Also, while I'm sad of the exclusion of Home Movies (Adult Swim DID premier with the episode 'Directors Cut'), I'm guessing it's not in there because all of the shows seem to be in house shows from William's Street, while Home Movies was Soup2Nuts. But, Metalocalypse is there for people who need their Brendon Small fix, so it's all good. Also, the pilot DVD makes the deal even more great, Welcome to Eltingville is amazing.

(Andrew J. Bush, 2009-10-20) For the [adult swim] fan, this may seem like an ideal gift. It certainly would be, provided they don't already own one or more of the seasons present in this box set. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken and Metalocalypse are present-day staples of the [adult swim] lineup. For those who have only recently tuned in, Sealab 2021 and Space Ghost Coast to Coast may be welcome discoveries of shows missed. Moral Oral is an acquired taste (I enjoyed it), and its inclusion is a little odd, whereas the other shows had more mass appeal to the [adult swim] audience. The obvious question is: Why are all of the shows not season 1? I don't have that answer. Suffice it to say the only [adult swim] show that requires sequential viewing is The Venture Bros. (whose inclusion would have made much more sense than Moral Orel). Viewers will not suffer from not having seen the first seasons of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (the show follows no on-going plotlines), Space Ghost (a late-nite talk show), Robot Chicken (a stop-motion skit comedy show), or Sealab 2021 (a sitcom-like series, but also does not follow on-going plotlines). My assumption is that Cartoon Network perhaps has too many of these particular seasons in stock, and felt this would be an excellent way to move some overstock. In any case, this box set is a wonderful sampling of what [adult swim] has to offer in way of programming, both past and present. What is not mentioned in the product description is the inclusion of a disc containing previously unavailable pilot episodes. They are: Korgoth of Barbaria, Welcome to Eltingville, Perfect Hair Forever, Cheyenne Cinnamon, and The Best of Totally for Teens. (Full disclosure: The inclusion of Korgoth and Eltingville made this a 'must buy' for this reviewer. I've kept a vhs recording of Eltingville since it first aired in 2002 and Korgoth was on my dvr for well over a year before being deleted.) These pilots also offer a great mix of animated comedy and a look at what might-have-been for [adult swim].

(Terence Kiang, 2009-11-09) This is an amazing box set... one of the most detailed and comprehensive that I've seen in a series box. The total size is a little bigger than a basketball. The Bender head is well detailed (for a cartoon head) and arguably "life-size". The front and back window display the "head" and there's a hatch in the back for DVD storage. The sides are mock photographs that create a refraction effect that water can give to fish in aquariums when viewed at an angle. I have not opened it, but the label outside says that the antenna is included for the top. This set includes all the DVDs and movies which is about the same price as buying all the items together (as of this writing). Definitely worth the $117 where it's priced now. So glad I got it on amazon instead of carrying it around at Comic-Con.

I already own the 4 seasons and all the movies on DVD, but when this complete collection came out I said "me want!" The problem is, this collection is a bunch of disks in a Bender head... sure, it's a great case, but the disks just go in slots... there is no directory for the discs, they are just labeled Vol 1 Part 1, disc 2, that sort of thing... there is no episode listing.

(nathanb131, 2009-10-22) I had the impression that this was a little box with a bunch of dvd's in sleeves with a holographic image on the outsides that make it look like Bender's head is in a tank. So I was surprised to find a very large box on my doorstep. The pic you are looking at is a box with clear windows and Bender's 'real-sized' head is in there! Awesome! You open a hatch in the back of his head and all the dvd's are stacked vertically in grooves. It's a fantastic and fun concept. I feel like I got so much more than I bargained for since the head is a fun display piece. Though here's the reason for the 4 stars: The hatch is sort of hard to open... though I suppose it won't flop open on it's own. My real issue is with the dvd rack once you open Bender's hatch. They are spaced very close together in those grooves AND it's kind of annoying to get the dvd lined up quite right when pushing it back in it's right slot. You have to really focus to make sure you are sliding it in right. Also, it's kind of hard to pull out the disks by holding them on the edge. You can, but just another 1/4" would have been nice. It makes you want to pinch the dvd on the flat parts, which leads to smudges. Also, you can't see what dvd's you are grabbing until you pull it out a little to check. They come stacked in order, so you just count down til you get to the right one. A directory on the inside of that hatch would be nice, in fact I'm going to make one myself. So the content is definitely 5 stars, anyone considering this already knows that. The head as a collector's item is way fun. The head as a dvd holder is a bit difficult though. I really like opening up Bender to pick out a disc, but could definitely see storing these dvd's in a sleeved case in the future. Another reason I'd do that is because the box bender came in makes a fun display too since it makes it look like his head is in a tank of water. So the last thing you'd want to do to get to an episode is to open the box, pull out Bender, fumble to pry open Bender, count down to which one you want and try not to scuff it while pulling it out....repeat. Note to fox, it would be great if you could open the hatch by pressing Bender's antenna, that's how he activates things on the show. It would also be great if when you pressed on the antenna you got a nice 'bit my shiny metal @#$' or any other Benderisms.

(Z. Velasco, 2009-10-16) I think this was a great idea and well worth the money IF YOU HAVENT ALREADY picked up any of the Futurama DVDs. However, the title is misleading as this is not a complete collection. See the name plate at the bottom? See how it says "1999 - 2009?" That's because Futurama is coming back with a new season in 2010. So if you want a release of all that's been released on DVD so far, this is for you. If you are hoping to get all of Futurama in one neat collection, I'd hold off and see if FOX decides to release another "complete collection" after the new season airs.

The high energy, action packed fight and chase scenes in Casino Royale and Q of S make this the Bond venue that Bond was meant to be. (RAP, 2009-11-06) No reason to belabor these comments - if you enjoyed the Connery/Bond movies, you will find this to be a deeply and excruciatingly painful degradation of the Ian Fleming novels. I will not watch or purchase another Bond movie with Craig in the lead role - for my money, he is almost the perfect "anti-Bond" - no culture, no sophistication, a deadly dull "tough guy" and totally politically correct - what a bore!!!

(BOND "DOUBLEAGENT", 2009-11-03) Action was jerky and did not flow well. It really seemed pieced together much like a movie is actually shot. Script did not flow well either. Scenes to short,and to many changes. Hard to follow storyline and hard to keep track of the characters. Casino Royale was much better. A slower pace but with action that would pull you in and end with a spectacular finish.

(Ben Larkins, 2009-10-26) I'll be honest, I came away with some mixed feelings about this one, but in the end it deserves the 4 stars it gets for a few reasons. It took me a while to get used to the different style of this movie, but once I did I believe it became all the more enjoyable. The writer/director/(insert important movie title) people took some liberties with the movie and the Bond franchise that in the end I believe paid off. Even from the start of the credits, I could tell this movie was going to be a bit different, and considering the sequel-esque nature of this film, it most certainly stood out, in a good way. The action was varied, but each setting that Bond found himself in was quite believable. It didn't feel that him being on a plane or boat was forced down our throat just to fulfill a mandate for more fast-paced scenes, as some critics will lead you to believe. What separates this movie from a good portion of so many other Bond films of the past is that the mental state of Bond, with all of it's humanity and baggage, comes to light. We see an older and more conflicted Bond. Casino Royale made us believe that Daniel Craig can carry the responsibility of James Bond quite well. Quantum of Solace helps us see the ups and downs of the burden of that responsibility. Overall, I enjoyed the movie, and enjoyed the pacing, acting, and variety that it brought. I believe that as a sequel, it did justice, and was enjoyable through and through. I wouldn't call it the best Bond movie ever, but what sequel could ever live up to such great expectations?

Lessee, we start out with cars chasing car, then man chasing man, then on to motorcycle chasing car (assault on the motorcyclist and steal the bike) for more motorcycle chasing car. On to boat chasing big boat then little boats chasing little boat....do you see a theme here? I swear to you it seemed like the entire movie was merely a collection of various chase scenes with a little bit of story squashed in for filler. I like Daniel Craig as the new Bond. The addition here of Olga Kurylenko was pleasant as both she and Craig know their jobs and probably did the best they could with what was offered. Judi Dench has been the best thing that has happened to the Bond series in years and hopefully she will stick around to the bitter end. Ah, speaking of which, we're back to the movie. I've spoken of the lack of substance as the negative in this review. For the postive aspects, we do indeed have Ms. Dench, we have a great new Bond, and we have a more serious tone rather than the tongue-in-cheek of Roger Moore or the boring Timothy Dalton. I really did like Brosnan and thought he suited that type of Bond film. Craig is perfect for the rough hewn, far from perfect agent. There does appear to be tendancy to kill everyone with no regard for any kind of law (yes, I'm fully aware of the meaning of "licensed to kill", but still!) Honestly, I'm really hoping the next Bond will rely more on storyline and less on mindless action. Ms. Dench and Mr. Craig have a lot to offer and will a little help from the writers/director I'm sure we'll see a much better Bond film next time.

(James Sparks, 2008-12-31) I love Gene Kelly! In recent years I sense that he hasn't gotten the due he has deserved. I might be the only one that feels this way, but it seems that our world today is steadily forgetting the great silver screen stars of our movie past that showed the rest of hollywood past and present what being a movie star was all about. Maybe that's just the way it is... maybe we can't do anything about it... But that doens't mean I have to like it! Enough of that.. This is a great movie in it's own right. Based on the Alexandre Dumas classic the movie stays true to the book, and pushed me to find other movies based on classic works. The cast is great! June Allison is so sympathetic (to me at least), and the best supporting character in the movie has to be Vincent Price. Gene Kelly the star of the film shows in comic chops, as well as his dramatic. I can't imagine any major film actor today being able to do what Gene did athletically in the film. Truely a film for the ages that every Kelly fan, silver screen fan, & Dumas fan should pick up.

(Scott Rivers, 2008-08-04) MGM's strange version of the Alexandre Dumas classic remains the most miscast swashbuckler in movie history. Gene Kelly plays D'Artagnan as though he were in a musical, which isn't surprising since George Sidney directs "The Three Musketeers" as though it were "Anchors Aweigh." At least Kelly doesn't sing. This 1948 production finds plenty of actors stuck in the wrong genre: Lana Turner, Van Heflin, June Allyson, Vincent Price, Gig Young, Frank Morgan and Keenan Wynn! Only Angela Lansbury and Reginald Owen emerge unscathed. Sidney approaches the Dumas adventure with an uneasy, uncertain tone - not helped by the cheerfully garish Technicolor. Happily, the filmmaking stylist showed a remarkable resurgence in his 1952 remake of "Scaramouche."

(CHASE, 2008-04-15) Previous reviews have gone on at length about the plot, and made comparisons to other productions, so I'm just adding a few thoughts. 1) Yes, Gene Kelly is jaw-droppingly brilliant in his swashbuckling scenes. I don't think I've ever seen anyone top him, including Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. Unfortunately, he does have a tendency to smirk at the worst possible times, including June Bug's death scene. 2) As some others have suggested, Lana Turner and Angela Lansbury should have traded parts, altho Lana's fake remorse scene, done with no make-up and a modified fright wig, is better than I would have expected from The Sweater Girl. 3) Did Miss Allyson have it in her contract that she would only wear costumes which included a Peter Pan collar? Her outfits are nearly as funny as the Musketeers, almost all of which were in various shades of pink, purple and puce. I've seen drag queens on Halloween who were less flamboyant! 4) Was Robert Coote ever THAT YOUNG??

Only Van Heflin keeps it going. Lana Turner, even when well cast, was an awful actress. Kelly can bound and fence, but his grief over June Allyson is barely serviceable. See the Michael York version instead...MUCH better! (Charlton Heston even makes a better Richelieu.)

I was thoroughly entertained. Excellent cast.

Will and Elizabeth are offered clemency by Lord Cutler Beckett if Will can get Jack's compass which points to what its possessor wants most. Along the way, Will runs to the Flying Dutchman, and meets Davy Jones who is also after Jack. Eventually, Davy sends out the Kraken, the large beast who belongs to Davy that stalks the waters. I highly recommend PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST!!!

We'll watch it again. Thak you, Grandma. They have learned the names of the three Musketeers and plan to read the book next summer when school is over.

(Westley, 2009-05-02) I've seen the majority of the "classic" Disney animated films, and "Robin Hood" (1973) does not come close to them in quality. The story features Robin Hood taking on King John, whose brother, the true King of England (King Richard), is off on the Crusades. King John is outraged after being robbed and tricked by Robin Hood and retaliates by increasing the taxes in his kingdom. This back and forth continues for awhile until Robin Hood finally triumphs. Yawn. The quality of animation of "Robin Hood" is not drastically better than what you would see in the typical 70s Saturday morning cartoon. The character designs are rather generic and undistinguished, particularly Toby Turtle, Sir Hiss, and Robin Hood himself. The plot is quite boring and certainly is not clever enough to entertain adults, although it may entertain easily amused children. Clearly, the film's low budget hurt it greatly. The only positive aspects were a couple of decent songs (especially "Not in Nottingham" by Roger Miller) and the conceit of making all the characters into animals. I haven't seen a few of them, but "Robin Hood" is my least favorite of all Disney animated films I have seen. Note: I rented this DVD, so I don't know what extras were offered aside from those on the disk, which included a cute Mickey Mouse cartoon and a couple of lame children's games.

There is zero cohesion, closure, and at least half of all the subplots you're introduced to vanish in the story without making any sense. Regardless, these movies are so full of action, customes, jokes, and adventure, that you really wouldn't care about the bad storytelling. After all, it's still a pirate movie. Storytelling could only be expected to be "Pirate Quality".

Yet as the third part of a tryptich, this is a stunning visual and narrative achievement. The visual effects -- the "visual achievement" part -- have obviously profited from the technological developments of the years following the first film. There is eye candy galore here and for silly folks like me who love watching things blow up in spectacular and impossible ways, there simply is not enough icy coke and popcorn in the world to ever get tired of watching this multi-layered spectacle. But the story-telling -- the "narrative achievement" -- is the real jaw dropper. Now, granted, this will not qualify as your over the top, academically significant, shrieking franco-european existential angst driven piece of "important" film making. But there is some very real story telling going on here that (a) takes it for granted that the audience is not stupid (which was a real problem for some movie critics when this was first released into theatres) (b) and as a result, unapologetically spins out multiply interlaced lines of story that collide, interfere, reflect and refract with one another. So confident are the story-tellers that they stampede over our expectations at the end, and do so with such meticulous and merciless care that it works in a way that could not have worked otherwise. Oh, and as with the first movie in particular, do be sure to stick it out until the end of the credits for the "Easter Egg".

(George Sarant, 2009-11-08) This is a dreadful film, even worse than the second installment, which was a big letdown after the first sparkling version. It is overly long, boring, slow moving despite the action, and a messy plot there is no point in trying to summarize. Given the Disney pedigree I can imagine kids squirming incessantly to this turkey. Here they've taken every sort of sea legend from the Flying Dutchman (without a Dutchman) to Davy Jones in a multicultural stew that doesn't see much of the Caribbean, but from Singapore to the Arctic in a convoluted mess. You have the frequent slaughter of British sailors and soldiers and the girl gets elected "king" of the pirates in a thoroughly ridiculous role. There's too little of Johnny Depp to save this picture. Gone is the wit and humor of the first movie. Worse, the spookiness and magic is totally absent as the Davy Jones crew becomes routinized into surface creatures engaged in ordinary battle. It says something that the best performer in the movie is a monkey. I hope this is mercifully the end to what began with a very charming film.

(James Simpson, 2009-06-09) The Sea Hawk(1940) is simply put, the way to make a Hollywood adventure film. Set during the time of Queen Elizabeth the First and the forming of the Spanish armada, the story focuses on a Captain Geoffery Thorpe(Erroyl Flynn) who leads a group of sailors to do battle against Spain who has sights on the destruction of England. Flynn is in top form and at his charismatic height, backed by his usual team of eccentrics and adventurers(including of course, Alan Hale). He romances the beautiful Brenda Marshall, standing in for Olivia DeHaviland, but being charming and pretty nonetheless. Claude Rains portrays a dubious Spanish ambassador and performs with great zeal and Henry Daniel is a great villian, even being able to duel with Flynn in one of the best directed sword fights ever filmed. Flor Robson is a very likeable Queen, with a crush on Flynn and there scenes together are some of the film's highlights. Director Michael Curtiz makes the epic move at a lightning pace and handles the action effortlessly. His direction being greatly enhanced by the legendary score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who adds a certain adventurous flair that will be mucgh imitated in future films. This print is a lovely remaster and even sports the original Sepia tone tint for the Spanish scene which adds immeasurably to the action and the feel of heat and desperation. The DVD is blessed with a load of bonus features including Theatrical Trailer and even a Documentary on the making of this classic. Highly reccomended Adventure film for all ages and a great piece of Cinema for Adventure seekers everywhere.

It is grand entertainment, handsomely photographed by Sol Polito and with a rousing score from Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Directed with panache by director Michael Curtiz, a dashing Errol Flynn displaying derring-do and lovely Brenda Marshall offering romance, it is one of the finest swashbucklers ever filmed. Flynn and Tyrone Power took turns in this heroic genre, each having some shining moments. No one ever really replaced Douglas Fairbanks at this sort of thing, but no one ever tried harder than Errol Flynn. Not as good an actor as Power or Fairbanks, he had an athleticism and charm which made him perfect for this genre, however. He had been kicking around the studio going nowhere when Carole Lombard took a liking to him, inviting him to one of her famous parties at an amusement park, where he charmed the pants off every woman there and caused studio bosses to suddenly take notice of him; realizing he might have something after all. The rest is history, as they say. Flynn would never win any awards, but audiences ate him up, making him a huge star at WB, where he made some of the most entertaining swashbucklers of the era. The Sea Hawk is a sparkling example. Everything is perfect in this film, from the lush black and white and sepia photography to a stellar cast, including Flora Robson as a terrific Queen, smart and with just a bit of a crush on pirate Geoffrey Thorpe (Flynn) who wants nothing more than to help his Queen, and keep England safe from Spanish greed. Of course, if he and his band of pirates profit more than just a little by slowing their progress, just as well. His ship is the Albatross, and the Sea Hawks are all that stand between England and Spain's King Philip, who is secretly preparing an armada to conquer England. Though the Sea Hawks are not officially backed by the Queen, her soft spot for Thorpe's good intentions and his loyalty to her leads to court intrigue as Elizabeth must deal with a crafty and very disloyal Lord Wolfingham (Henry Daniell), who is in league with Spanish Ambassador de Cordoba (Claude Rains). Complicating matters is Cordoba's beautiful daughter, part English Dona Maria (Brenda Marshall), who warms to the pirate and falls in love. A secret mission given an unofficial nod from his Queen proves to be a trap, and before Thorpe and his crew can save England from Spain's treachery he will improvise a daring escape from the galley of a Spanish ship, romance Dona, and cross swords with Wolfingham. An exciting finish laced with romance makes everyone happy. Marshall is quite lovely and makes a fine heroine despite what some say, and Robson is fantastic as Queen Elizabeth, giving her life and humor. Flynn is a grand hero, and this film is perfect for what he had to offer as a star. The sepia-tone portion of the film harkens back to silent films as does the presence of Donald Crisp as the Queen's loyal advisor. Rarely has something set in 1585 been this exciting! A lush romantic glow of ships sailing away by moonlight while a teary Brenda Marshall watches longingly blend perfectly with an exciting screenplay by Howard Koch and Seton Miller and the heroic deeds of charmer Flynn in one of his finest moments. A must see for fans of this genre.

McElroy, 2009-09-17) This is perhaps the worst DVD quality I have yet seen from a major studio: colors are washed out, resolution is mediocre, for the first 20% of the film there are vertical scratches in the print, and the music in the opening credits shows severe high frequency loss. The defects were so many that I didn't bother pursuing the audio in greater detail although speech was at least reasonably intelligible. Overall, the quality is about on a par with a VHS tape and vastly inferior to that of the laserdisc issued in 1993. In a quick check of reviews here I found only one person who commented on the poor quality of this DVD and, surprisingly, I found a review that praised its quality. That was from a "Top 100" reviewer which confirms my suspicion of reviews from people who write large numbers of them. Combined with the serious scratches in the print of the Olivier/Garson version of Pride and Prejudice which I recently saw, I've become a bit leery of purchasing a Warner DVD without renting it first to examine the quality. Potential purchasers of this title might want to do the same to see if they can tolerate the many defects in this release.

I had to return a tape to a seller because of this issue. Marsella, 2009-01-15) Ivanhoe is one of those old fashioned Hollywood productions that can be enjoyed both for what it was , a great swashbuckler , as well as a nostalgic look back at a type of film that would never be made today. The cast is first rate and the while the film predates some of the tech advances that were used in the huge blockbuster epics to come in the next decade (Ben Hur, El Cid and Cleopatra as examples) it is still beautifully filmed. No film from this period will be completely free from being somewhat corny by today's standards and Ivanhoe has some element of that. The battle scenes are entertaining but blood free and a bit short on realism. The screenplay is generally well done but with lot's of archaic lines ("Make Ready The Boulders"). The film based on Sir Walter Scott's novel takes a few liberties with the original story. Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor and the supporting cast appear to be really enjoying themselves. All in all I really enjoyed this and it reminded me of the type of film my friends and I would go see at a Saturday matinee when we were kids.

On those three counts, this film was a rousing success. I, on the other-hand, enjoy outdated concepts like writing, dialogue, acting and a funny thing called "plot". The movie is just so badly put together from a thinking mans point of view. Don't get me wrong, the film is a beautiful spectacle. The effects used to create the robots are astonishing. The way Bay refused to hide the effects in darkness was a bold move, and it worked. However, The Dark Knight proved that you can make a smart, thinking mans film, based on a concept generally aimed at children. And on top of all that plot, acting and dialogue, there were also massive special effects. Outside of the visuals, Transformers failed to be even an adequate film on nearly every level. Here is the most maddening part of the film: * The military has a cube that the decepticons want. The cube is in a heavily guarded military installation. What is the most logical thing to do with it? Why drive it into the middle of a populated city of course! If you choose to watch this film, please do yourself a favor and watch it in BluRay with full digital surround sound, and shut off your brain. Just eat popcorn drink soda and "feel" the film for what it is. A vehicle for Michael Bay to show you all his neat toys. T

A great example of super Blu-Ray reviews are those Amazon customer reviews for PREDATOR - those reviews told me a lot about the transfer and the extras, and warned me that I probably didn't want to invest in the current Blu-Ray release.

Nevertheless, I am incredibly pleased to own 'Watchmen: the Ultimate Cut'. Although, the film has been out on DVD for several months and everyone who's going to watch it, probably already has, I feel like 'the Ultimate Cut' is new to the public. The integration of 'the Black Freighter' completes Zac Synder's phenomenal and faithful cinematic adaptation of the 'Watchmen', and the extra material is massive and comprehensive, which is only fair to the fans, who feel milked and cheated, or who just love the 'Watchmen'. With 'the Black Freighter' interwoven into segments throughout the film, it extends the movie to over three and a half hours long and fills in the missing pieces from the graphic novel along with a few other small live-action scenes, that weren't in the 'Director's Cut', making it all the more magnificently epic, fresh and unique. 'The Black Freighter' is a grim tale that parallels the lives of different Watchmen, particularly Rorschach's, and their compulsion to fight evil everywhere they think they find it, blinded to the consequences of their actions. Tremendously realistic and beautiful animation and the voice of Gerald Butler, bring this intriguing and fan-favorite aspect of the story to life, but it's the effective and pragmatic interweaving of it, that reflects on the Watchmen and stays true to the original source. The film itself is still uncompromising, uncommercial, and unprecedented. It's still the 'Watchmen' movie you always wanted, but never thought you'd get, but now, even more so. All the crime-noir, political satire, superhero mythology and science fiction is still there, so unless you forgot the most ambitious, most reverent, most obsessively faithful (to a point) cinematic adaptation of a graphic novel ever and all the stunning and innovative movie magic that went with it, then there won't be much else new for you to get your hopes up for. I love 'Watchmen: the Ultimate Cut'. I'm glad I bought it. If you're a fan of the 'Watchmen', and need the complete version of the film, then you'll love it and be glad you bought it too.

Now, I can get both on one disc (and watch it only when she's not around). The fact that it's incorprated into the Director's Cut of the film is awesome. Can't wait for it to arrive!

(D. Reed, 2009-11-07) Live-action wise (the animated films having always retained a mature nature since 1992), this is the best take on Batman since Burton's two. Batman's origin's are explored and some of his training is delved into. Christian Bale makes for a good Batman, the voice that he uses for the character doesn't get on my nerves as most people would think but my main complaint are, like others, is the action sequences. There are too many fast cuts and the action is just barely indistinguishable. Michael Caine is the best Alfred, Michael Gough from the previous four hardly being in them until Batman & Robin, and that was only because he was dying. Caine's version is much more involved with Bruce and cares about him, a noted scene being when he's driving a poisoned Batman home. You can tell that he's deeply worried about him. Katie Holmes. How to describe her. Well she's more believable as a DA than Denise Richards was a physicist but she doesn't really convey any emotions (much like Lois Chiles and Barbara Bach from the Bond films). And her inexplicable interest in wanting to know Batman's name seems almost forced in my opinion. I know he saved her life, twice, but she's never really given any inclanation to really find out who he is. Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy are perfect as Ra's al Ghul (Ra'Z al Ghul is not his name) and the Scarecrow respectively. My main problem with the villains, Scarecrow imparticular, is that they look nothing like their comic book counterparts. I know Nolan wants to keep a "realistic" look to the films but I wish he were a little more faithful to how they looked in the comics. The plot is very good, with plenty of twists and turns to keep a new viewer on their toes. Lastly, James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer's score is quite good but their heroic theme is quite forgettable when compared to Danny Elfman's, but definitely a step up from that atrocious Elliot Goldenthal.

(I'm not sure which subtitled language is listed because I don't read either language, but I suspect it's Chinese because some of the characters are much more complex than most Japanese characters.) Also, IF YOU OWN A SONY BLU-RAY PLAYER THIS DISC MAY NOT PLAY! I sold a perfectly fine Batman Begins BD to a guy with a Sony player who fantasized that the disc was filthy or heat damaged, neither of which were true. Only after he bought a 2nd BB BD and discovered that it, too, would not play in his Sony BD player did he realize the problem was his player, not because I was some sort of scheister, which I'm not. [...] After the guy returned the disc to me it played (and is playing now) perfectly fine in my PS3.

The feature films are, of course, stunning in high definition and for me it was definitely worth holding out for Blu-Ray since I am set up with the finest equipment just so I can enjoy these kinds of special-effects, high-adventure movies.

(Pumpkin Man, 2009-10-27) I have been waiting for a 4th Terminator film for six years, and I'm glad I finally got it! It had a great storyline, great actors, great special effects, and a great direction! In the year 2003, Marcus Wright is on death row and sign his body over to Skynet for medical research. 15 years later, John Connor is the leader of the Resistance against the machines. He finds out that he is on Skynet's hit list along with his father, Kyle Reese, who is a teenager. Marcus is back and meets Kyle and Star. They try to get to John Connor, but Kyle and Star are captured by a machine and taken prisoner. Marcus reaches John and his crew to tell him about Kyle. We soon find out that Marcus is a terminator who thinks he is human. Marcus helps John by going into the heart of Skynet's headquarters and disable its defenses so John can save Kyle Reese and the other prisoners. They must battle some tough Terminators in order to make it out alive. I highly recommend TERMINATOR SALVATION!!!

I loved the three previous films, the third being the weakest in my opinion, and even loved the way that the television series was so true to the mythology of The Terminator. Though the Terminator Salvation did stay true to the mythology in terms of characters, location and historic story development.it simply fell short. Mc.G is an okay director....though the only thing I really half like of his is Charlies Angels full throttle. The cast is outstanding, and do put in a good performance...but the overall story of the film is wanting. Unlike the previous Terminator outings this film is not about fighting the future...instead this film is about a futuristic fight. The Terminator story line was simplified into a futuristic war movie. Don't get me wrong...it was kinda cool to see the war with the machines in live action...but they could have and should have done more to make this story not only follow the mythology but "feel" like a Terminator film, quite literally you could have called this film Transformers 1 1/2 and it would have been just as good. The need for the future to be unknown, changing, and chasing after the present is one of the coolest things about the Terminator movie franchise and is one of the things that is desperately missing from this film...and keeps it from fitting comfortably in the Terminator series. I literally felt robbed after this film, not only does the film not feel like a Terminator movie...but after its all said and done, as a viewer you realize that it was nothing more than a set up for a squeal. The failure for the Production Team to get the idea of the Terminator Mythos correct is devastating to this movie, and the shotty writing and reliance on spacial effects to carry the film is it's downfall. In short this movie is allot of popcorn fun...but a very bad Terminator Movie.

Huffman, 2009-10-18) I saw this movie with my son, and it is nothing like the other movies but make a little bit of sense to me but I think it could have been a hell of alot better with fighting sequence and special effets. I understand why sam worthington is a terminator because of my states gov. not being able to film in it but yet they use the cg versiion of him, that was cool. on the other hand I think they should bring worthingtons caracter back for the next movie and give him more of a role as well as other cast members . and find someone other than christan bale.....

(C. J. Lahart, 2009-10-16) I dont care what naysayers or even critics who get paid to criticize the film, this IS a worthy sequel. Sure it aint the same without Arnold being there throughout the movie but ever since watching flashbacks of the future war in the previous installments, id say it was about time that someone made a film that shows what happens next after judgement day happend. If you watch closely, you would notice more than one homage to the first two films. From seeing the ruins of observation area where the first terminator arrived in T1, Marcus showing Reese how to handle a shotgun by tying a string to it which Reese did in T1 to help hide his gun in his trenchcoat, to a similar chase scene with a truck & the motor-terminators lookin like the first chace scene in T2, and even John Connor playin ( You Could Be Mine) by Gun's N Roses to lower a motor-terminator into a trap etc. Anton Yelchin really impressed me as a young Kyle Reese throughout the film just as Sam Worthington played a great cyborg who later finds out he's a pawn to eliminate mankind. Christian Bale pulled off John Connor well himself. As for Moon Bloodgood, Common, & Bryce Dallas Howard i would say it was unfair to discredit them when they didnt get that much screen time. But anyways, if you're a true terminator fan you will enjoy this film. Especially the climax that leaves you wondering what awaits John connor in further battles. Keep in mind that the film takes place in the early years of the war and if you still dont like it, stick to the Terminator: TSCC tv series instead if thats more your taste.

(FRED C. DOBBS, 2009-08-08) This is a GREAT movie and one of my all-time favorites. Just when you thought Bogey was packing it in he provides us with one last great performance. He plays Commander Philip Francis Queeg, the Captain of a US naval ship during WW2. The veteran Queeg appears to be an eccentric, aloof and pompous old tyke. He is surrounded by a basically much younger bunch of subservient officers who probably wish they had one half of his experience and bark. The group is led by the second-in-command Lieutenant Steve Maryk played by the always charismatic vet actor Van Johnson. Fred MacMurray, a vastly underrated performer [remember his all-time UNFORGETTABLE kick-butt performance in DOUBLE IMDEMNITY, 1944] plays Lieutenant Tom Keefer, a self-serving, judgmental, know-it-all sycophant. Eyebrows are continually raised onboard with Queeg's increasingly odd behavior. The "strawberries" caper is a beaut. The level-headed and practical Maryk seems to brush things off as normal aging and long-time-out-in-the-sea quirks while the perturbingly intrusive Keefer defines Queeg as a paranoid loon. Things come to a head during a nocturnal typhoon that threatens to upend the ship. Queeg, called to the bridge as the ship is being rocked, makes the wrong calls, is questioned and ultimately breaks down. As Queeg freezes with lives at stake Maryk, citing Naval regulations, relieves Queeg of duty and takes over command of the ship. This is a stirring scene. Maryk is able to save the ship but he, along with all his officers, are accused of mutiny and court-martialled. Things look bleak as there are no lawyers willing to take the case. Jose Ferrer plays the military lawyer willing to give it a shot. Ferrer is perfect for this role. Courtroom interrogation, banter and repartee is lots of fun but most evocative is Ferrer's final verbal assault and denudation of Queeg's psyche. The sight of a tired, lonely, neglected and war-beaten Queeg, sitting and twirling his fetish-like metal spheres in his hand to a disturbing clicking sound is memorable and worth the price of your ticket. But it ain't over yet as the masterful Ferrer uses the post-acquittal party to unload on the saved officers---some prima donnas, some passive-aggressive, some not having a clue as to what part of the system failed. Ferrer's drunken exposition and rebuke of MacMurray's character and his final challenge is a CLASSIC and can't be missed. Ferrer is AWESOME. Indeed, Queeg was part of a system [military] where teamwork is essential for success as well as survival. Unfortunately, often leaders are envied, despised and even ostracized by their men and neglected and objectified by a system that frowns upon, and may not be willing to recognize, mental dissolution. Queeg had no one who would listen for the purpose of helping him, but there were many who would listen to excise him. Bogart's performance was terrific---poignant, detached, marvelously underplayed for the stars around him---further cementing his status as an icon of American cinema.

(Dr. Z!, 2009-07-14) This is a first-class and well-acted movie. The plot is gripping and kind of different from the usual Bogart films. I'm also a big fan of multi-talented Jose Ferrer, and as usual he delivers with a superb acting job. The picture quality and sound is very good and the 1.85:1 aspect ratio makes it even better. Bottom line, with all these great actors and Edward Dmytryk as the director, how can anything go wrong?! Buy this one.

I rate 'Treasure of Sierra Madre' slightly higher but, in both movies, Bogart's character undergoes a toxic personality breakdown. He does a magnificent job in both movies. In 'The Caine Mutiny' the flawed Queeg disintegrates under the pressure of battle and gains the perjorative of 'Old Yellow Stains'. Officers, under the influence of the MacMurray character, mutiny, taking over the unhappy ship. There is a trial in the course of which Queeg totally decompensates under interrogation. The mutineers...who might have been hanged...are acquitted. The defense attorney shows up at the acquittal party. He shows up drunk and angry. He identifies the slimy and cowardly MacMurray character [who, by crawfishing at all the right times, has avoided indictment] as the real author of the 'Caine Mutiny' and throws a drink in his face. A subplot, seeming to lack common sense, between two young lovers (Robert Francis and May Wynn) only served to lessen the concentration and distract our attention from the real story... Also, at the court-martial, a long trial sequence, was clearly anticlimactic, though it included the film's most tense and unforgettable scene, that of Queeg disintegrating as he pronounced his statement... But we had noticed it all before, after all, aboard the Navy destroyer, the U.S.S. Caine... We had seen Queeg as a strict disciplinarian and a compulsive, unstable commander, earning, in his limited imagination, the total disregard of both officers and crew... So we knew what would occur when he got on the witness stand... "The Caine Mutiny" is a splendid character study, a tale of bravery and cowardice at odds with one another... The film received seven Academy Award nominations included one to Humphrey Bogart who delivered a terrific performance...

(lorokidul, 2009-11-02) "Billy Budd", from Herman Melville's story, is directed by Peter Ustinov, and set at sea in 1797. Ustinov plays Captain Vere of the war-time British navy vessel on which the story unfolds. The angelic, pure hearted young Billy Budd (Terence Stamp in his first film role), is a psychological threat to the cruel Claggart(Robert Ryan), whom life has turned into a man who must destroy any sign of goodness. He no longer believes in it. He is filled with darkness and hatred. A situation develops which becomes a battle of Good versus Evil and a demonstration of a conflict between Justice and Law. Ustinov, as the Captain must enforce the rules of the Navy - being ruled by his head, rather than his heart. His duty torments him to breaking point. This classic tale is an unforgettable experience, in gorgeous black and white Cinemascope. Black and white very well suits this film about polar opposites. You also get commentary by Terence Stamp, and Steven Soderbergh.

(Craig Connell, 2009-01-30) First, it's nice to finally see this out on DVD with an excellent widescreen transfer. The great cinematography alone made this cry out for a good DVD transfer, which was released by Warner Brothers in March of 2007. As for the story, a nice, innocent kid getting brutalized by an incredibly-sadistic 1700s ship officer is not always easy to watch, but this is one of the better under-publicized films of its day. It sill holds up, some 40-plus years later. It was an apt choice to cast Robert Ryan as the sadistic "Claggart." Ryan played mostly villains in his career and is extremely effective in that role here as an intelligent-but-sick-and-vicious bully. In fact, his character in Billy Budd remains one of the most memorable villains I've seen in a half century of movie watching. It isn't just his deeds. The looks on his face alone as he delivers his lines make him fascinating. Peter Ustinov gives a great performance as the captain of the ship and a man who has to make a big, big decision about Mr. Budd, played by a young and boyish-looking Terrence Stamp. The character "Billy Budd" is about as pure and innocent as some of the characters Jennifer Jones played in the 1940s, such as Cluny Brown, Bernadette Soubirous or Jennie Appleton. Also of interest is Melvyn Douglas as the aging seaman. This is simply a powerful and very involving film, one that is hard to forget.

It is well written, directed, acted, etc. Billy Budd, along with Mutiny On The Bounty, are the two most authentic movies ever produced that takes place primarily on a ship. If you have not seen this movie, you will be amazed at the quality of this production.

It is as if you are lying down with your eyes closed, listening to an old man tell a story. As the words of this gentle and noble soul carries you along with his feelings, your mind is filled with rich imagines, and you dare not move or speak in fear of breaking the spell. I think it's like a bedtime story, but for all ages. This film produces it's own unique effect that the experiencer takes with him. You will always remember the salty flavor of it. Tracy has perhaps never been so well placed, he contributes mightily to the effect.

I think Hemingway and Tracy must have been cast from the same mold. If your interest is in action, danger, excitement and the like; then pass on this movie. If you love a good narrative, then this is just what you need.

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken is based on a true story of a girl who wanted to make more of her life. She wants to make it big in Atlantic City and finds that jumping horses off a tower into a pool might just be the ticket to get her there. But she isn't just going to be given this, she is going to have to work for it. Some of my favorite parts of this movie are the romance and comedy. This movie has it all and you will be wanting more when it's over.

That's because this a nice, old-fashioned film and Gabrielle Anwar as "Sonora Webster" was a pleasure to watch. I'm sorry she never developed into a major star, although she's stayed busy in her acting career. This is a based-on-a true story and if a woman really performed diving horse acts while blind, well, that IS incredible. It makes this film certainly an inspiring story. I enjoyed looking at the recreation of the Atlantic City Boardwalk during its heyday. Overall, the colors could have been better in this film, however. There was too much brown, but it's not a major problem. The story is the man thing here and in that aspect, it's a winner.

It takes place during the Great Depression, a topic we have been more interested in lately given the down economy, and I thought it would be a good depiction of how tough times really were back then. (Just Anonymous, 2009-10-16) This movie must be played on Memorial Day if you have any family members that served in the US military. It's one of the last of the great WWII movies but it's more than that. This movie has great actors, great acting, is fairly curret, tells a national story, and gives us a glimpse at WWII, and it has Charlton Heston who plays a Navy Captain (Colonel) involved in the Midway defense. If you don't know, Midway was the defining battle of WWII. Until that point, the Japanese Navy had been advancing steadily (although the battle of Coral Sea slowed them down) but after Miday (where Japan lost), the Japanese Navy began a decline that led to the end of the war. The movie is surprisingly current and is pretty easy to follow. Its not as dated as some of the movies of that time (to me, some of them are unwatchable). This is a good movie, tells the story of this giant battle where so many Americans and Japanese perished near island of Midway. The movie is interesting in that it shows the movie from the perspective of both sides and it touches on some of the Japanese concentration camps in the US. It's a movie that tells us quite a bit if we pay attention. The acting was first rate and although not perfectly correct from a historical standpoint, it comes pretty close. It's a definite, must own for any collection.

The quality is fantastic. The audio is easily manipulated through our home theater settings. I hope all my future purchases of these types of movies are as pleasing!
