(Amos Lassen, 2009-04-23) "Sole Journey" Peaceful Combat Amos Lassen First Run Features brings us "Sole Journey", a documentary film about using political measures to combat anti-GLBT hate speech. Soulforce is a movement that has its goal to end religious and political discrimination against the GLBT community and it does not use combative methods. The members of Soulforce use the strategy of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. They are skilled in non-violent resistance and acts of civil disobedience to confront anti-gay speech as well as religious and political oppression. One of the targets is James Dobson. Dobson has used acid rhetoric as well as social conservative public policy against the GLBT community and he is one of the reasons that peaceful negotiation came into being within the community and it was decided that it should be used against him and other anti-GLBT fundamentalists. Dobson's Focus on the Family is a highly funded and politically powerful organization that attempts to destroy civil rights for the GLBT community. The film shows us those that participated in the 1000 Watt March, Vigil and Concert. These people marched 65 miles to show their feelings on the assault against their community. Chad Allen, Judy Shepherd (mother of Matthew) and the Reverend Mel White participated. By interweaving stories of commitment and courage of the leaders of Soulforce, we see how a small group of individuals can take action against adversaries. The film shows how we can use non-violent means as a way to keep and maintain our self respect and go after discrimination at the same time.
