(Sarah M, 2009-11-04) I went by the reviews on this one and do not regret the purchase. It was a sweet story with pleasant actors and a delightful glimpse into the fanciful mind of the young Alcott writer. Although the movie may be a rare case of "better than the book," it is still very much the sort of thing one would expect from an aspiring novelist. That in itself makes for a fascinating bit of observation almost as if one is watching her development as well as that of her characters. This movie is not for the true critic however. I was able to enjoy it for what it is but would not share it with friends who are film connoisseurs. Even while watching it myself I could hear their snickers and comments in my mind! (A classic example would be the cliche "love at first sight" scene where all stops, the music plays, etc, etc.) As such, I gladly give it a three for being perfect as itself and highly recommended to the undemanding audience.

(C. Arnett, 2009-10-21) I love this movie. I could watch this movie anytime. The actors are great. The characters are wonderful. The plot is great,it has old fashion morals and qualities in which you don't see anymore. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves period movies.

(Lubug, 2009-10-13) I was very excited to watch this movie, being a lover of period/costume romances. The story is centered in New England and revolves around the heroine, Edith, who was orphaned as a young child and taken in by a wealthy man in order to serve as a companion for his daughter, Amy. A beloved part of the family, Edith is given the task of making their new guest, Ida, feel welcome, as she is visiting in order to meet eligible young gentlemen in the upper echelons of society. When a chance meeting introduces Edith with a handsome, wealthy suitor named James Percy (Gibson) it is love at first sight. However, Edith is not his equal in the Early New England caste system and Ida never lets her forget it (wanting Percy all to herself.) Eventually Edith and James get together, but not without having to deal with the obstacles of a very tradition-oriented society of wealth and power, as well as misunderstandings, and familial loyalty. This story is very predictable, which is fine with these types of romances, however the quality of the dialogue, acting and overall production is horrible. The movie felt strained and unbelievable from the start. I had to check and see where this was supposed to be taking place, as Ida and Amy both had a hint of an English accent. This movie is not believable AT ALL and painfully cheesy. No matter what Edith was faced with, her adoptive family was forgiving. The necklace debacle literally had me groaning it was so unbelievable. Alas, there was NO chemistry between the main characters which is necessary for a production of this sort. All in all I found this movie to be a complete waste of time, enough so to come on and write a review about it (especially after seeing all these positive ones.) If you're a fan of these types of stories, try the BBC productions such as classics like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice (I prefer the 2005 version), Persuasion (2007, with Rupert Penry-Jones) and North and South (Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe.) I recently discovered the last two (before this one) and have watched them several times since. THEY are what a good romance story should be. Don't waste your time with this fluff.

(S., 2009-09-23) I cannot believe pepople give 5 or 4 stars to this movie. Yes, the casts are all beautiful hollywood type of faces, but the story is really boring - boring plots, unreal setting, tooooo sweet acting. This movie is too "sweet" so it is probably made for young girls who might enjoy it. But, for the people who watch BBC period dramas or read 19th century novels, do skip this movie since what you are looking for is the quality, production, characters, acting, plots, and scenes. This movie has none of the above but beautiful faces. If this movie has a decent storyline, I might give it one more star. I sold it right next day after watching it.
