The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)

The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. What's New?

(O. Centeno, 2009-10-21) The product was in TIP-TOP shape. NEVER before opened, everything was brand-spankin'-new, no dings, no corners bent and the extended edition of this film is the ONLY way to see this movie. There's a Blu-Ray edition coming out of these movies & I knew that before purchasing this Extended edition of the 3rd installment of the series. However, the blu-rays are the theatrical releases only & the extended edition blu-ray comes out way later, so I opted to purchase this in DVD. This Extended Edition is more thrilling, 50 minutes (almost an entire HOUR)of extra film added to the viewing experience seamlessly integrated into the whole film.....a gazillion hours of extras-bonuses-goodies. An Extended Edition on DVD is far superior than a stinkin' Blu-Ray THEATRICAL release, hands down. Get this extended on DVD to hold you over 'til Blu-Ray Extended Edition packaged with better stuff, then it'll be PERFECT. If you play the DVD on a Blu-Ray anyway...like my PS3...the quality of the DVD gets upscaled, so you're still getting a win-win deal. Trust me...don't think...just buy this. End of story!

(Jill Fridenstine, 2009-10-15) We received this order in good time- we love this series and now can enjoy it whenever we want! The movie was in perfect condition!

(Kimberly Falcetti, 2009-10-15) The movie came in on time, in perfect condition. I was very happy with it.

(G.G. Benson, 2009-10-11) Alright, there really isn't much that needs to be said, I think. It is most amazing. Though, when one watches the commentary/extras an appreciation for the amazing work that was done really distills in the mind. In fact, it makes the movies so much more enjoyable to see what went into it--from the actors, from the director, the art people, just everyone. Well worth the money.

(Amaranth, 2009-09-23) "Return of the King" is a fitting end to the Lord of the Rings saga. It's got adventure,it's got romance, weddings, something for everybody. Like a bento box. Again, there are spectacular battles for the guys,as well as Legolas, and a (shirtless) Frodo for the fangirls. Everybody leaves... satisfied. The adventure is engrossing, and let's just say the ending is a major tearjerker. I don't tear up at movies, but this one got my eyes all teary. "Return" resumes where "Two Towers" ends. Frodo and Sam go deeper into Mordor. In the meantime, Aragorn is asserting his kingship and rallying the troops. Denethor sends his son Faramir on a suicide mission. Aragorn,Legolas, and Gimli also take the Paths of the Dead,to help the ghostly warriors seek release. Aragorn himself is torn between his betrothed the elven, immortal Arwen and the earthly, human Eowyn. Merry and Eowyn--both banned from the battlefield--find comfort in each other (sorry,NOT THAT WAY) There are also the two sexiest sequences in the series--Frodo's romantic vision of Galadriel, and then Frodo, shirtless,in Cirith Ungol. The whole epic is pure gold--but that scene in Cirith Ungol--is gilding the lily, the cherry atop the cake, the frosting on the cake. It's,um,that good. "Return" basically ends with a triple wedding. There's a double wedding of Aragorn to Arwen, Faramir to Eowyn, and in the Shire, Sam to Rose. Frodo goes westward because Galadriel gives him a come hither look at the Grey Havens (THAT'S a happy ending) Sam finds comfort in the domestic life. It's worth noting for all its epic battles and royalty,it's basically about the home and the family. (Fangirls might be annoyed at the heteronormativity of the ending--but that's what the internet is for!) The movie also ends with Frodo's narration. For anyone who's curious, Elijah Wood has done the "moral of this story" ending (sorta like the ones at the end of '80s He-Man/She-Ra/GI Joe cartoons) narrations for "The Faculty","Green Street Hooligans",and back in the day,"The Good Son." It's become ubiquitous. "Return" manages to weave together a complex storyline, spectacular special effects, excellent acting (and for some, just acting) to make a perfect epic. It's that excellent a movie. Enjoy the adventure!
