Top Gun Cusomter reviews:

Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 371

(D. Mikels, 2009-09-25) Okay, I confess. TOP GUN is a rarity--it's one of the few Tom Cruise films I can tolerate. (The other two being Rain Man and Valkyrie.) In fact, I not only tolerate TOP GUN. . .I flat out like the heck out of it, even after all these years. Yes, the plot is farfetched and silly, no armed services would put up for one nanosecond the antics of an undisciplined pilot, and someone looking like Kelly McGillis as a jet pilot instructor at a naval aviation school will actually happen when herds of elephants swim the Atlantic, but it matters not: This Eighties classic gets up and moves just like the F-14s bolting through the skies. Cast, cast, cast; that's what makes an action/drama succeed. And here we have a topnotch ensemble, from Cruise himself as the "need for speed" Maverick, a loose cannon living on the edge. McGillis's character as instructor-turned-love-interest is unbelievable, but easy on the eye; Val Kilmer as top rival Ice is cool, calm, collected, and deliciously confrontational; Anthony Edwards as Maverick's cockpit sidekick Goose provides consistent comedy relief; and Tom Skerritt as flight school commander Viper is as good as it gets. Oh, there's even this little cameo by a young actress named Meg Ryan that quietly hints here's an actress with some chops. The jet fighter sequences are breathtaking, the action and drama relentless, the acting first rate--and it's all augmented by a sensational musical score. All in all, TOP GUN is a keeper, Tom Cruise or no Tom Cruise. Could've done without the beach volleyball scene, but that's just me. --D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning

(Aaron C. Hersom, 2009-09-12) I don't care who you are. It's Top Gun for cryin' out loud. Buy it!

(D.S., 2009-08-12) The only acceptable reason for not watching this film is because you are still busy watching "Tommy Boy."

(S. Mayo, 2009-07-19) I never understood what all the fuss was about. The characters are not believable, the hero gets cut a vast amount of slack for what would be unacceptable behaviour in any flying school in the world, and what did the girl see in this guy, anyway? Egomaniacs don't make good pilots, boyfriends or heros. An unrealistic look at a subject that deserved better handling. Strictly for people who think that being cool is all about breaking rules and not caring about others. It's very 1980's in attitude, and it shows.

(Loic Henry-greard, 2009-07-11) I hadn't seen this movie in almost 20 years. Whatever passes as story and characters that they put as padding between the flight scenes are so embarassingly formulaic and stupid that I was soon hitting fast forward every time until jets were scrambling again. Apart from the "last fight" scene which is spoiled by terrible missile hit SFXs, the air scenes are stunning in HD. That photography really makes this disc great. That's my first movie purchase that made me fully satisfied of switching to Blu Ray. You've GOT to have a serious sound system hooked on your player too.
