Rom-com favorite Sandra Bullock and the affably charming Ryan Reynolds’s superb chemistry turn The Proposal from otherwise standard romantic-comedy fare to one that is entertaining and sure to garner laughs. Margaret (Sandra Bullock) is a workaholic, tyrannical book editor (reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada) who suddenly finds her career in jeopardy as she faces deportation back to Canada. Her solution is to simply fake an engagement to her unsuspecting assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), who in turn blackmails her for a promotion. However, when Margaret is forced to head to Alaska with Andrew to visit his family in an effort to make their story believable to the deportation officers, they soon realize that their plan may not be so simple after all. The supporting cast of Dad (Craig T. Nelson), Mom (Mary Steenburgen), and kooky Grandma (Betty White, still a scene-stealer at 87) is great casting that makes for many amusing scenes. Bottom line: witty Reynolds and Bullock are perfect sparring partners for each other and not half bad to look at either. --Lisanne Chastain Stills from The Proposal (Click for larger image)

The Proposal (Single Disc Widescreen) Cusomter reviews:

Average Rating: 3.5 Total Reviews: 29

(Shiloh L. Dion, 2009-10-17) I just watched this movie two nights ago by myself. I don't know Guys; I really think it could have been better. I really don't like the way they portrayed Ryan Reynolds's character. I'm so much happier when he can be himself or some other version of "Van Wilder." Sandra Bullock was funny? I don't know I think I giggle like five times through out the whole movie. The story was cute and predictable. The story is that Sandra's character is from Canada and is getting deported. Ryan's character is her assistant and is forced to marry her or loose his job. I just wish Ryan was more sarcastic and funny like he's known for. Sandra plays a good hard arss but not really believable. All in all I give this movie a three out of five. If Ryan was topless more often maybe there were be a higher score.

(G. Teslovich, 2009-10-17) Another formula romantic comedy with all the stereotypes. Do these typecasts sound familiar? (1.) Testosterone promotion driven female boss puts her job above relationships. (2.) Resulting in cowering subservient male and female workers. (3.) Enter some bureaucratic government worker to create some improbable scenario that sends boss into emergency action to protect her job. (4.) Which results in boss having to rescue her job by developing a relationship with one of her workers. (5.) Subservient worker gets back at the boss by having her meet the family. Family has a couple of issues tossed in to add some dynamic tension. (6.) But overall the family/community is real down-home country with a lot of money (just to show that money doesn't matter). (7.) Denouement - boss comes to grips with her lack of humanity and marries worker. Too scripted, nothing new, but a formula that works because there's always an audience for romantic tension comedies. One extra star for setting and a few good minor roles.

(Harold Wolf, 2009-10-17) FUNNY-ROMANCE-SCENIC-STARS-A KEEPER WORTHY OF MULTIPLE VIEWING Sandra Bullock (who plays Margaret Tate) makes this movie. She portrays well the multiple emotions and conflicting sides to the Canadian-born, NYC book editor of a large publishing company. In the office she's known as "The Witch" by her underlings, who is everyone. She is forceful, demanding, self-serving, even cruel. But knock-down gorgeous, as always. Margaret is about to be deported since her Visa expired and paperwork was undone. Her only way out of the situation is demanding her secretary, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), marry her. He's desperate to get his own book published, as well as be promoted to an editor in the company, so he agrees. Why not, he's been pushed around by Margaret for 3 years already. A deal is made but Andrew forces Margaret to a kneeling proposal. Unfortunately, in the impromptu engagement announcement, happening in front of the Immigration official, Margaret agrees to visiting Andrew's family for the engagement announcement at the upcoming 90th birthday of Grandma Annie (Betty White). Most unfortunately, in Alaska. Betty White steals some scenes throughout the film. White still has what it takes to make me laugh. She'll have new generations of fans after this movie. Margaret (Bullock) goes to Alaska and finds Andrew's family wealthy and friendly. Margaret has no family of her own. This is not the first movie that Bullock has played a role where she falls in love with a boy's family before falling for the lad. See "While You Were Sleeping", also a great, recommended, film. The seaside village, Sitka, is real, absolutely breathtakingly wonderful, photogenic, scenic, and quaint. You'll want to fly off to Alaska and join them in Sitka. But don't. The filming was from Rockport, Massachusetts. In the story, Margaret, still witchy, was less than fully impressed with the Paxton Empire, or as she called the, "the Kennedy's of Alaska." Sitka is where the fun begins. Seeing the "engaged couple's" first glimpse of each other naked was an outrageously funny scene. Also Grannie and Margaret's thanksgiving dances to nature. Also when Margaret tries to trade with an eagle, the tiny family dog for her cell phone. Tons of comedy. Even the ending credits are funny. A fun bit of romance. Toward the end my wife teared. Mostly, I laughed, but there are some touching moments. Great film for a date with your significant other. One film that should not be missed.

(J. Dykstra, 2009-10-17) This movie has a lot of good actors and actresses who do a decent acting job. However, the storyline seems like a collection of typical romantic movie situations cobbled together into something that isn't very meaningful. The movie is supposed to be about two people who don't get along and have an abusive one-way relationship at work, but who, through a series of events, end up falling in love. My first complaint is that Sandra Bullock is misused in this movie. She is one of my favorite actresses in romantic comedies, but she is always at her best when she's the sweet, innocent-girl type. In this movie she is supposed to be the tough, driven boss everyone hates. She never really effectively gets out of that mode and the so the eventual happy scene at the end seems a little unbelievable. My second complaint is that rather than developing a good storyline that focuses on character and relationship development between the two characters, the movie seems to go for a montage of the typical plot devices for this type of movie. There's the crazy old grandma, the conflict between dad and son over career choices, the discovery that one of the characters was really from a rich family, the scene where the two that supposedly hate each other have a forced kiss that ends up being nice, the scene where the two that hate each other accidentally end up undressed, the scene where the grandma suffers a heart attack and everyone has a change of heart, the scene where the guy realizes too late he loves the girl and goes chasing after her and the list goes on. The problem is that the movie seems to want to pile up all of the "expected" scenes for this type of movie rather than focusing on a meaningful story so that in the end, the happy resolution seems like it comes out of left field. The production quality and acting in the movie are pretty decent, so if you like this kind of romantic comedy this movie is probably worth taking a look at. If you are expecting a top Sandra Bullock movie that will rank up there with While You Were Sleeping or Two Week's Notice, you will probably be disappointed.

(W. Oliver, 2009-10-17) I was so looking forward to viewing this because I like both Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds (and of course Betty White!) and I was expecting a great time since it was a huge box office hit and had good buzz. After 30 minutes, I started wondering when the hysterical moments would begin. Unfortunately they never do. Sure, there are a few scenes that are mildly funny but I found most of the film awkward and strained. The leads are attractive, the setting is gorgeous, and the photography is outstanding but the movie fails to get off the ground and the whole scenario is just unbelievable.
